The 3rd Annual Snow-Blower races almost had to be
put on hold as two of the organizers (Shawn Pylinski)
has an injured foot and (Mayor Kent) has a possible
cracked rib, plus the warm temperatures and melting
snow. Mayor Kent says with weather permitting, the
races will go on as planned, starting promptly at
midnight New Years Eve.
Even with the rain on Christmas eve, the Candlelight
Services at the Churches were well attended and very
beautiful.
The Annual Meeting of the Edmeston Free Library will
take place in the library building on Friday
evening, January 9th at 7:00 P.M.
With above average temperatures, Saturday evening
and Sunday morning, Tom & Linda Eriksen had a caller
on their front yard. Yes, Mr. Skunk paid them a
visit. Makes you wonder if he's mixed up or if we
are in for an early Spring.
January, February and March will again find the
Legion Breakfast (first Sunday of the month). Funds
from the breakfasts will be used to support the
Legion Boy State program. It's a great meal and a
good cause, so lets support it. Breakfast served
from 7:00 - 10:00 A.M.
I have been informed that the Firemen's Calendars
are here. In the event you were not contacted and
would like one or don't received the one you
ordered, contact any fireman. Not to worry about
starting on the first of the year, the present
calendar goes through January and the new one starts
with February.

The first day of Winter and the shortest day of the
year is now history. It found us with a big snow
storm and now there is no question as to if we will
have a White Christmas.
Several of our local residents are on the "Sick
List". Get well wishes go out to: Gene Cole,
Lorraine Corts, Nancy Sherwood, Marge Holdridge,
Bernie Nonenmacher and anyone else I may have
missed.
Proud Grandparents, John & Sue Parker of Edmeston
had reason to celebrate on October 23, 2008, when
Justin & Alison Parker became the parents of twins
(Alexander James and Hannah Elizabeth)
Congratulations!
Happy New Year!
Edmeston December 14, 2008
Where does the time go? Seems like just yesterday we
were celebrating Thanksgiving and now it is almost
Christmas.
When
it comes to Santa, the grown ups are about as
excited as the kids. Almost 100 kids came to enjoy
"Breakfast with Santa" Saturday. There was snow on
the ground, a chill in the air and lots of
excitement as the children sat on Santa's knee to
have their pictures taken. Sausage and eggs, cocoa,
cup cakes and candy were all part of the scene.
The staff from the Edmeston Office of the NBT Bank,
along with guests, enjoyed a Christmas Dinner at the
Taters Restaurant at Tsuga Links, Saturday evening.
A very enjoyable time, even though the temperature
outside was only about 12 degrees.
Remember the old saying "As the days begin to
lengthen, the cold begins to strengthen"? Well, like
it or not, Sunday will be the first day of Winter
and also the Shortest day of the year.
Not knowing the publishing schedule for the upcoming
Holidays, I'd like to wish all of the readers a very
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Edmeston December 7, 2008
The "Christmas Around the World" dinner was held
Sunday at the school. With snow flurries in the air,
about forty people showed up to enjoy delicious food
and a talk by Pastor Jay Henderson on his trip last
Summer to India.
This Saturday, December 13th, will find the
firehouse busy with "Breakfast with Santa" from 9:00
to 11:00 A.M. Pack up the kids and let them enjoy
breakfast, as well as a chance to tell Santa what
they would like for Christmas.
Edmeston Tea Circle's Kay York has announced that
she is now able to reproduce Edmeston miniatures
from past years. The entire series includes the Five
Sisters, the Barber Shop, The Train Station, The
Gaskin House, the School House and Fire House. To
order any of these, or the current miniature of the
Opera House, call Kay at 965-6207 or
khyork@oecblue.com.
In last weeks Gazette I gave an address for sending
a Christmas card to a recovering American Soldier.
The information that I had received was incorrect.
Since then I have made four phone calls (automated
response type) and have learned that the correct
address for sending cards is: Holiday Mail for
Heroes, P.O. Box 5456, Capital
Heights, MD 20791-5456. If you had
already sent a card, you can expect it back as that
is what happened to me. Sorry folks.

The Edmeston Rotary Club will again be sponsoring a
clothing give-away. This is to be held on Saturday,
December 13th at the Second Baptist Church.
Donations of "gently" used clothing are needed and
may be dropped off at the Church anytime. Lets check
our closets and donate some items to help keep
someone warm this Winter.
"Christmas Around the World" The Area Counsel of
Churches will be having the annual "Christmas Around
the World" dinner at the school on Sunday, December
7th starting at 12:30 P.M. Bring a dish to pass and
table service. Beverage and desert will be
furnished. Pastor Jay Henderson will speak on his
trip this summer to India.
During the Sunday Service, at the United Methodist
Church, the congregation left the sanctuary briefly
to gather outside on the new access ramp. Pastor
Bessemer lead the congregation in prayer to dedicate
the access ramp.
The Holiday Banners are now in place along the
streets. These are made possible by the Edmeston
Rotary Club. This year the Holiday Banners are also
in South Edmeston and West Edmeston.
Breakfast with Santa will take place at the
firehouse on Saturday, December 13th from 9:00 to
11:00 A.M. Come, enjoy Santa, eat breakfast, have
pictures taken and get a gift. A great way to start
off the Holiday Season!
When making out your Christmas Cards, why not
include one to a recovering American Soldier? The
address is: A Recovering American Soldier, c/o
Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 6900 Georgia Ave,
NW, Washington D.C. 20307-5001.

Due to the overwhelming generosity of the community,
Pack 9 Cub Scouts and Troop 9 Boy Scouts collected
over 1000 items of food for our local food pantries
during the Scouting For Food Drive. Every item
collected stayed within the community to help local
needy families. The Scouts would like to thank
everyone who helped out.
Congratulations to the girls soccer team. On
Saturday, they became co-champions with the S.S.
Seward team. Both teams now share the championship
(Class D) for New York State Soccer.
A call was received this weekend from the North Pole
and Santa's workshop. Yes, plans are being made for
"Breakfast with Santa" on December 13th at the
firehouse, sponsored by the firemen's auxiliary.
Details will be coming shortly so keep the date
open!
Don't forget the Edmeston Tea Circle bake sale and
miniature pick-up, Saturday, November 22nd at the
Community Building (formerly the Legion Hall)

Did you notice that the light on the
American Flag at the firehouse is now working? For
sometime it has been out, but through the efforts of
Edwin Stevens, it is now once again in good repair.
Thanks Ed!
Recently Gordon and Joan Terry attended the National
Funeral Directors Association Annual Convention in
Orlando. The convention floor was host to a wide
assortment of funeral goods and services. The
underlying theme seemed to be pet orientated. The
Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home now has a Pet
Funeral Store. For more information on this, log on
to
www.hjtfuneralhome.com.
Joan had a chance to visit with her Dad right after
they returned from the convention. It was the first
time she had been able to visit her mother's grave
since last March 2008. She brought with her a bag of
Irish Dirt to spread. Joan's mother was very proud
of her Irish heritage. She left the bag with her
Dad, so he could continue to visit her grave and
leave a bit of Ireland on each visit.
Ed, Joanne, Kip & Regina Pylinski attended the

appreciated.

Last week, the first snow fall of the season came as
quite a surprise. School was delayed for two hours
and many residents were without power for two or
three days.
Monday morning, the ladies of the United Methodist
Church gathered at the Legion Hall with potato
peelers in hand. The job ahead, to peel the potatoes
for the Election Day Dinner (no instant stuff for
them)!
The Edmeston Tea Circle has chosen the Edmeston
Opera House for their Bicentennial miniature. If you
are a regular collector, your name is on the Tea
Circle list. If not, reserve a miniature by calling
Irene Howard 965-6255 or Marge Rowlands 965-8715. If
you're fond of Marge's Apple Pizza Pie, she will
take your order. Mark your calendar for Saturday,
November 22nd when you will be able to pick up your
miniature. There will also be fine baked goods on
sale and official Town of Edmeston Bicentennial
items as well. Think Christmas and get your shopping
done early and close to home.

The two fourth grade classes toured the Local Museum
on Wednesday. This has been done every year and is
in connection with the Local History part of their
studies now taking place. The students are able to
see many items that are from the past and also ask
questions. Some of the questions are very
interesting, but when you consider these students
weren't even born when these things were in use, it
make for a good experience.
The Edmeston Rotary Club Halloween Party will take
place at the School on October 31st. Starting at
6:00 P.M., there will be games and fun, followed by
a parade and refreshments.
Looks like November is going to be a busy month. The

Many people use the Columbus Day weekend to close
camps, fold tents and get camping trailers ready for
Winter. They certainly had perfect weather this year
to do those things.
Wes & Rosemary Stephens took advantage of the long

Congratulations to Mike & Sharon Stevens on the
birth of a new daughter. Alicia Marie Stevens came

What ever happened to Thanksgiving? For better than
a month now, the stores have had Halloween
merchandise, now they are getting ready for
Christmas! Have we become so commercial we don't
recognize Thanksgiving? The dictionary says its "a
day rendering thanks to God for blessings granted to
nation". It's time we get back to some of the
basics!
Weather permitting, work is to start on the handicap
access ramp at the United Methodist Church this
week.

Monday at 11:07 A.M. Fall officially started. We
have had a couple of frosts and some of the trees

The Edmeston Volunteer Fire Department is having an
open house, Sunday, October 5th.from 1:00 to 4:00.
Come see the new Tanker Truck and Rescue Truck. This
is an ideal time to meet some of the firemen and ask
questions that you may have. The Fire Department as
well as Emergency Squad are always looking for new
members. If you have ever considered either, but
have questions, this is the ideal time to have these
questions answered. Refreshments will be served.
A belated Congratulations to Deb Peter on her

well deserved.
The United Methodist Church will be having a Rummage

No matter how you look at it, another Labor Day has
come and gone. This year we did have good weather
which helps soften the blow that Summer is coming to
an end.
Watch out for stopped school buses! Yes, school
started for the students on Wednesday. We need to be
reminded to watch for small children and stopped
buses. Many times, first year students, especially,
are either upset or anxious to get on/off a bus and
will dart into the road. Lets be extra cautious and
pay attention, besides, it's the law!
We have a new arrival in Town. Steve and Laurie
Goodrich have adopted a nice little baby boy. His
name is Aaron-Timothy and he is from South Korea.
Laurie has taken a leave of absence from teaching
this year so that she and Aaron-Timothy can get to
know each other. Congratulations to Steve and Laurie
and their new addition.
Now that the days are getting noticeably shorter,
and we will start staying inside more, perhaps even
calling for a little heat - this is the ideal time
to check batteries in Smoke and Carbon Monoxide
detectors.

Oops, I goofed! I was going to give the date that I
started writing the Edmeston column, but with the
family reunion, thunderstorms, etc., I forgot to put
it in. I first started writing the Edmeston column
in March, 1999. Can't believe it has been that long.
Karen Blackman, Escondida, California, has been
spending some time with her parents, John and Dottie
Blackman. She has now returned to California.
Seventeen members of Troop 9 recently traveled to
Gettysburg, PA. While there, they toured the
battlefield and town and also visited President
Eisenhower’s farm. Over the course of three days,
the Scouts hiked a total of eighteen miles while
retracing the steps of the soldiers during the
Battle of Gettysburg. On the way home, they stopped
at Cabela’s in Hamburg, PA. More trips are planned
in the near future. If this sounds interesting and
you are a boy between 11 and 18, contact Dr. Johnson
at 965-8613.
The Edmeston Free Library has purchased an
informative book which had been recommended to the
librarian. The title is "Gas and Oil at your Door".
Because so many have concerns about signing leases,
the usual sign-out period for this book will be
restricted to one week, so all may have a chance to
be informed. The book may be renewed if no one is
waiting for it. A reserve list has been started.
Have a careful, safe, Labor Day!

spending the week with Grandma and Grandpa Eriksen
before returning home to start school.
The Schworm reunion was held at the home of Leon
Schworm on Sunday with relatives from Albany, New
Berlin and Edmeston. The weather was just great and
a good time was had by all.
Ever wonder what happened forty years ago? You
certainly couldn't tell by reading the "Early Files"
in the Gazette. For some reason they report
happenings for twenty, thirty, fifty, sixty and even
seventy years, but forty is skipped right over. I'm
sure there must have been some births, deaths,
weddings and what ever, lets give the paper a call
and see why forty is left out.

Don't think I ever remember having so many storms,
and with such continuous lightning and thunder.
Usually by now the lawns have almost quit growing

A loyal reader tells me that Mary Lou Higgins had a

The "Gazebo Club" recently discussed the pictures
that Bob Nonenmacher puts up in Halil's market every
week. Do you know when he first started putting them
up? (It was Schworm's Store at the time). Give up?
Bob started putting the pictures up in June, 2000,
and has faithfully changed them every Wednesday. If
you aren't familiar with what I am talking about,
stop in the store and check them out.
Talking about the pictures and when they were first
put up makes me wonder if any one can tell me when I
started writing the Edmeston column for the Gazette.
Do you know? (answer next week)
Edmeston Aug. 3, 2008
They say "no news is good news", but in this case,
no news is for a short column. It isn't often that

have something that would be of interest to the

Congratulations to Carl and Marie!
Have you noticed the "New Club" in Town? I think
they call it "The Gazebo Club". From the gathering I
see there mornings, I think to join you must: be
able to sit or stand for at least 10 minutes, be
able to join in on the conversation (or add to it),
discuss all kinds of topics and be able to laugh and
enjoy the fellowship. It's great to see these people
enjoying themselves. Keep it up. Glad you have a
place where you can meet.

Billed as "The Best Six Days of Summer", the Otsego
County Fair is this week in Morris. Many people no
doubt will attend the fair rather than take a trip
some place due to the price of gas.
Tim and Cindy Davis, Ohio, daughter, Jennifer and
husband Greg, of Kentucky, were here visiting
friends and relatives in the area. While here, they
were able to attend the firemen's convention and
parade.
From the very start, to the very end, the Firemen's
Convention was a big success. Everyone who had a
part in it in anyway is to be commended. With the
number of people who attended (especially the
parade) come Sunday afternoon, you wouldn't know
that there had even been a convention in Town. The
groups and people in Town have always been good at
helping each other and that is just one good thing
about Edmeston. Fire Chief Artie Klingler wants
everyone to know that he appreciated all the help
and support!

It just occurred to me that we have passed the

Bill and Nancy Sherwood, Jeannine Palmiter and

Little Sammy Eriksen spent the weekend with his

The Edmeston Fire Department hosted the 125th Otsego
County Firemen's convention this past weekend. The
weather was good and everyone seemed to have a good
time. The banquet was on Friday night at the school.
John Parker was the guest speaker and talked about
Otsego County. I understand he did an excellent job.
To end the convention, a big parade came up South
Street and turned up West Street to the carnival
grounds. The evening ended with a fireworks display.
The Star Spangled Banner took on a new look for most
of us. The Delhi fire department had their aerial
truck here and placed it near the fireworks area
with it fully extended and an American flag at the
very top. With the fireworks in the background it
made you think of "rockets red glare and bombs
bursting in air" from the Star Spangled Banner. It
gave you an idea of what Francis Scott Key must have
seen when he wrote the Star Spangled Banner.
The Edmeston Free Library board met Monday night at
the home of Dick and Lori Saunders on East Street.
Kim Pylinski, New Orleans, La. is visiting her
parents, Ed & Joann Pylinski as well as other family

Jan Piazza spent the weekend with Ed & Joann
Pylinski and attended the Alumni banquet. While here
she went to Brookfield and also attended the
graduation party of her grandniece, Helen Helmer, in
Whitesboro.

By the time this goes to press, the Otsego County
Firemen's Convention will be under way in Edmeston.
Don't miss the Community Garage Sales on Saturday,
as well as the big parade, Saturday evening,
starting at 6:00 P.M., followed by a huge fireworks
display. Good time for all!
Don't sign before you know how this will affect you!
Attorney Christopher Denton will be at the Edmeston
Central School, July 15th at 7:00 P.M. to explain,
and answer questions pertaining the Natural Gas
Drilling. Please don't make any agreements with
anyone until you know the facts. This is a very
important meeting, don't miss it!.
At the Alumni Banquet the other night, officers for
the coming year were elected. They are: President:
Diana Parker, Vice President, Barb Finley Pylinski,
Treasurer, Artie Klingler and Secretary: JoAnn
Lindberg Van Vranken.
Guess the old saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix
it", pertains the organizations as well as other
things. Last weeks Rotary meeting found the same
slate of officers running as last year. In case you
have forgotten, they are: President: Scott Porter,
Vice President: Christine Lindberg, Secretary, Dave
Green, and Treasurer, Barb Fallis.
See you at the Firemen's field for an enjoyable
time!
Edmeston June 29, 2008
Rain, rain, go away was the chant being uttered by
those trying to have graduation parties, before,
during and after graduation. The rain did hold off
for the actual graduation.
The Edmeston Central School Alumni Association held
its annual banquet on Saturday evening with 234 in
attendance. A warm evening, but enjoyed by everyone.
Members of the Class of 1963, presented a memorial
in honor of Terry Graves, who gave his life for his
country. Terry was a member of the class of 1963.
Be informed before you enter into an agreement for
Natural Gas drilling. There will be an informational
meeting, July 15th at 7:00 P.M. at the Edmeston
Central School. Attorney Christopher Denton will be
on hand to explain the do's and don'ts of entering
into an agreement. This is a very important meeting!

My article last week about the crickets brought
several comments and observations. One lady even
said her husband cranked up his hearing aid, but
still didn't hear them, so guess we don't have them
any more.
Have you noticed the large "pesky" flies that were
imported to supposedly eat the tent caterpillars?
Seems like most of the caterpillars have been taken
care of - wonder what our government will do about
the flies. (I have heard they only live a few days,
so guess it will take care of itself.
There are at least four couples in our area
celebrating 50 years of marriage. Congratulations go
out to: Bill and Andrea Gott, Elaine and Wally
Kellogg, Ron and Jill Bennett and Alice and Joe
Quintin.
Last weeks Pennysaver had a notice about the
Community Garage Sales, July 12th, stating there was
a $5.00 fee to be put on the maps. This was in
error! There is no charge, it's free! Contact
Michelle Tasior at 965-8041 before July 2nd to get
on the maps.
Reading the Brookfield news by Janith Burch in last
weeks Gazette where she says "no seniors were
present at the alumni gathering" brings back
memories. It was always the custom for the Seniors
to come to the banquet as a class, and the Junior
Class always acted as servers. Guess some of the
good old traditions have given way to the "I don't
care" attitude.
The Baccalaureate Services for the Class of 2008,
was hosted this year by the United Methodist Church,
Sunday evening at 8:00P.M.
Congratulations to the Graduating Class of 2008!
Edmeston June 15, 2008
In the early morning hours (long before most of them
are usually even awake) a bus pulled into the school
parking lot to pick up the members of the Senior
Class for their class trip to New York City. They
left Thursday morning and are due to return late
Sunday night.
While sitting on my front porch, enjoying the warm
evening, I could hear the frogs croaking, see the
blinking of the fireflies and enjoy nature in
general, but something was missing. It took awhile
before I realized that I didn't hear the chirping of
the crickets. Come to think of it, I don't remember
hearing them last year. What has happened to the
crickets?
If you are planning to join the Community Garage
Sales, July 12th, call Michelle Tasior at 965-8041
to get your name on the maps. It's free, but you
must contact her before July 2nd.
The Annual Drinking Water Quality Reports for the
Edmeston Water District #1 (Public Water Supply

Just a note: First day of Summer if June 20th and
Graduation is Sunday, June 29th. Have a good week!

If you missed the Historical Panels at Peet Hooks
Days, or this past Sunday at the Community Church in
South Edmeston, you can see them this coming
Saturday (June 14th) in West Edmeston during their
annual garage sales. The panels will be on display
at the firehouse.
There is to be a public meeting, June 19th, at the
Edmeston Central School at 7:00 P.M. This will be an
informational meeting about "Habitat for Humanity".
Come to hear about this program and ask questions.
Find out what this is all about.
For those of you with computers, if you want to view
pictures from Peet Hook Days, check out the slide
show at

a little while to load, but you will be able to see
the entire slide show.
The day of the Firemens Convention Parade (July
12th), there will be a community garage sale. To
have your location put on the map, call Michelle
Tasior 965-8041. In order to make up the maps, it is
necessary that you call no later than July 2nd.
There is no charge to have your name put on the map

good turn out.
Happy Fathers Day!

The weather has been far from ideal
for anyone camping. Many folks had planted their
gardens, as they usually do around Memorial Day,
only to have them freeze. With the high price of
produce, more and more will be having a garden this
year.
Have you noticed the nice banners along the streets?
Some are American flags, some for the Bicentennial
and the newest ones for the Firemen's Convention,
July 10, 11 & 12. Once again a reminder, if you are
planning on having a float in the parade, July 12th,
it is most important you contact Linda Eriksen
965-8544 to get signed up for a spot. Spaces are
limited, so to be sure you have one, contact her.
Congratulations to the Edmeston Baseball team for
the win on Saturday. It looked like Mother Nature
wasn't going to cooperate, but she finally let the
sky clear and the game took place.
Two important days are rapidly approaching. The
first will be Fathers Day, June 15th, then close
behind will be graduation on June 29th. It always
seems like a long way off, but it will sneak up on
you.

With the Memorial Day Holiday, (Monday) I'm not just
sure when the paper will print, so will send my
column in early.
It looks like the parade for the Firemen's
Convention (July 12th) is going to be a big one! I
am told that if you or an organization you know of
are planning on entering a float, please contact
Linda Eriksen (965-8544) to be sure of a spot in the
line-up.
7th Annual Perennial Sale. The Perennial Sale
sponsored by the Edmeston United Methodist Women
will be held Saturday, May 31, 2008, 9 AM to 4 PM,
at the corner of St. Hwy 80 and 51 North. The
Perennials are proven hardy as they are from local
gardens and have multiplied despite pruning by local
wildlife. There will be a variety of plants suitable
for tall background plantings, sun and shade
gardens, rock gardens and ground covers. Cannas and
Calla Lilies will be new to the inventory this year.
For questions, call Faith Smith 965-6742.
Sometimes
its hard to know when a caption fits a picture. This
was the case Saturday when two ladies from the
Edmeston Fire Department planted flowers on the bank
in front of the firehouse. Decked out in blue
slacks, the gals worked very hard to complete the
project. Someone passing by called me to see if it
would be called "Blue Moon" or
"Full Moon". Regardless of the caption, the gals did
a great job.
Thanks Terry & Patty!

Edmeston Rotary Club will have their annual Chicken
BBQ following the Edmeston Parade.
Everyone, please have a safe Memorial Day Weekend!

The sun greeted mother this morning for her
"Special" day. By afternoon, it clouded up up, but
all in all a nice "Mothers Day".
The Rotary Club worked last Wednesday to clean up
the Veterans Park. Some shrubs were removed and
trees trimmed. The gazebo was pressure washed. This
was a great job and much needed. Now if the kids
will only take pride and keep it looking nice. The
Rotary is asking the public to try to keep an eye on
who is there and what they are doing.
"Peet Hook Days" is ready to take place in full
swing this weekend. There will be lots to see and
do, so plan on attending and taking part, after all,
a Bicentennial doesn't come along every day!
The Edmeston Free Library Board, met at the home of

reported that a new selection of books has arrived
from the Four County Library System, so there is
lots of good reading available.
Congratulations to Lisa Jensen, Valedictorian and

honor. Lisa plans to attend Cazenovia College to
major in interior design. Matthew will attend Utica
College to major in Pre-medicine.

To all the Mothers and Grand Mothers, Happy Mothers
Day, May 11, 2008. It's your day, so have a good
one!
Ed & Joanne Pylinski have returned from visiting
their daughter, Kim, in New Orleans. While there,
they toured the French Market, had coffee at Cafe
DuMont, toured the city and walked up Bourbon Street
and enjoyed all the good music. On the way home,
they visited Marion Pylinski in Virginia.
The Bicentennial Committee met in the Town Clerks
Office, Monday evening, to put the final touches on
the plans for "Peet Hook Days" (May 16, 17, & 18)
Incase you didn't get a pamphlet listing the
activities for the weekend, they are available in
the stores as well as the bank. Looks like thee will
be lots to do and enjoy!
The Edmeston Rotary Club will once again have their
Chicken BBQ on Memorial Day following the parade. I
haven't heard any thing different, so I guess there
will be the usual parades (West Edmeston, Edmeston
and the big one in Burlington Flats) will try to
find out the times for sure.
Several people have entered floats in the Firemen's

Troop 9 Boy Scouts, Johnny Knorr, David Johnson,
Daniel Menendez and Nick Stueben, with Webelos Scout
Brian Knorr, helped to stock Wharton Creek on
Friday, April 18th. All you lucky anglers should
thank the Scouts for their hard work. If you want to
know where they hid the really big ones, come to the
Scout meetings on Sunday nights.
The Scouts were busy as beavers (no pun intended) on
April 20th when they raked and cleaned up the West
Edmeston cemetery. Johnny Knorr, Justin Kucera,
David Johnson and Nick Stueben had lots of help from
some Pack 9 Cub Scouts, Wolfgang Clements, Roland
Clements and Jonathon Dunham. The cemetery looks
great! The community is lucky to have such dedicated
young men in our midst.

It's time to Spring into action! Yes, the Watercress
Greenhouse (Scott Convis) will be open for business
on May 3rd with a great selection of plants and
flowers. Don't forget Mothers Day, May 11, 2008.
The Library book sale was very well attended. In
understand quite a few of the Bicentennial items
were sold also. Many thanks to all.
Has a child ever ask you how they make quilts or a
chair? Saturday, May 17th (Peet Hook Days) will be
the perfect time to answer questions like that and
show them how its done as well as other old time
things. This will take place at ECS in the old gym
from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Pamphlets telling the
activities that will take place at Peet Hook Days
are available in stores and the bank. Sure sounds
like an exciting and enjoyable weekend.

Justin Kucera was recently awarded his Star rank.
David Johnson, Johnny Knorr and David Kucera were
awarded their Second Class rank - Congratulations!
If you should see any of these boys, congratulate
them for their achievements.
The Bicentennial Committee would like to thank the
Scouts for leading the parade at the Community
Birthday Party and also for leading the Pledge of
Allegiance.
The Edmeston Central baseball team won their first
league game - congratulations! Hope the winning
streak continues.
The Edmeston Water Board has been searching and
testing for a large leak that has been lowering the
Town water supply. Good News! the leak has been
located and no doubt by the time this goes to press,
will be repaired.
The "Echoes of the Past" Revisited book, put out by
the Bicentennial Committee, has created quite a lot
of good comment. If you didn't get a copy and would
like one, they are available at the bank. Calendars,
books, maps, mugs, plates and throws are also
available, at the library.

"Happy Birthday - Edmeston" rang out several
times during the celebration in the gymnasium
Tuesday Night. Over three hundred gathered to
celebrate the founding of the Town of Edmeston 200
years ago. The school band provided music while
people found seats. The band performed marching
music for the Scouts, Cub Scouts, Brownies, Girl
Scouts and other groups to march in. The Pledge of
Allegiance was led by the Boy Scouts. Martha Winsor,
School Principal, opened the ceremony by welcoming
everyone. A letter from newly appointed Governor
David Patterson and proclamations from Senator James
Seward and Assemblyman William Magee and Otsego
County Representative Betty Ann Schwerd were read.
Jessica Conboy, designer of the logo, was recognized
and presented with a mug with the logo on it, by
Bicentennial Chairman, Leon Schworm.In
recognition of 31 years of service as Town Historian
and Museum Curator, Bob Nonenmacher was presented
with a clock from the Edmeston Free Library Board.
Following the ceremony, everyone adjourned to the
cafeteria where they enjoyed displays, cake, punch,
coffee and Stamp Cancellations. Memorabilia was also
available.
People are now looking forward the May 17th & 18th
when the Bicentennial will continue with "Peet Hook
Days" (a trip back to yester-year) Plan on joining
us then!
Trout fishermen were out in full force this weekend.
The streams were still a little high, but that

Sunday found many folks out cleaning up from Winter.
The sun was out and a little breeze, but temperature
was just about right to work.

March came in like a lion, but as I write this, it
looks like it may go out as a lamb. It certainly
didn't look like it Friday morning when we woke up
to six inches of heavy, wet snow. The trees were
beautiful, but many of them suffered from the weight
of the snow. Several areas were without power for a
number of hours. We usually seem to have one snow
like this before it clears the air and Spring
arrives. Lets hop this was it!
Even with our crazy weather, they tell me the maple
syrup season is the best it has been in several
years.
New front doors have been put on the United
Methodist Church. This is the first stage of a
project that will end up with a handicap access into
the Church.
The cake contest, sponsored by the Wharton Valley
Grange #991 had over fifteen entries. Sorry I can't
give the results, but they won't be available until
long after this has gone to print. From all
indications, the attendance for the Town Birthday
Party is going to be great.
With the temperature hovering around zero this
morning (Sunday), the members of the Edmeston Fire
Department left at 6:45 A.M. for a controlled burn
in South Edmeston. It's very comforting to know that
regardless of the weather, these devoted people are
there when we need them!

A little cool for the Sunrise Services, but at least
not storming. Easter Sunday turned out to be quite
nice, even though there was a cool breeze. Seems
good to see the sun!
Think I'm about the last person to see robins, but
fear not, I saw one Sunday. I also noticed in a
couple of places where the pussy willows are out.
Shouldn't be long now before we see more signs of
Spring.
I saw Gloria Cole in Town Saturday, so guess that
means the migration of the Winter birds has started.
It's always nice to see them back. Welcome home
Gloria.
Haven't heard how many entered the cake contest
sponsored by Wharton Valley Grange #991, but its
bound to be a good time. Contest winners will be
announced at the Bicentennial Birthday Party, April
1st. Please keep in mind that the Bicentennial
Program starts at 6:00 P.M. sharp (at the school)
followed by the party. From all indications this
will be a fun event. Hope to see you there!
Bicentennial Stamp Cancellations will be done in
West Edmeston and Edmeston Post Offices on April
1st. If you collect stamps or know someone who does,
or if you just want something to remember the event,
be sure to be there. Efforts are being made to have
the cancellations continue at the school in case you
didn't get to the Post Office. Not sure if we can
arrange that or not.

unable to attend because of practice at church, so
the auxiliary took eggs to the church for them. No
one was left out!
The Wharton Valley Grange #991, is sponsoring a

snowy, but I guess Mother Nature will take care of

The Edmeston Free Library held their bi-monthly
meeting, Monday evening, March 10th at the home of

coming back North. Sunday, March 9th, we go on day
light savings time. Don't forget to set your clock

different.
Don't forget the chicken and biscuit dinner, March
14th. Serving from 4:30 to 7:00 P.M. at the Town

Plans are in place for the Community Birthday Party.
200 years ago on April 1st, the Town of Edmeston was

building back over to the Town. Guess this will be

more than they were making on the breakfast. The
Town at the present time will continue letting
organizations use the building, while they look into
other options. If you have any good ideas, let the
Town Board know.
