Edmeston December 30, 2007
The usual greeting of the New Year (tax bills) have
arrived! I didn't get a Gazette last week, so assume
they didn't print between Christmas and New Years.
At the time I am writing this, it doesn't look good
for the "snow blower" races. Mayor Kent talked about
trucking in snow, but checked with the weather man,
an was promised snow for Sunday night and during the
day Monday, so looks like all systems are go!
On Friday, December 28th, the lobby of the NBT Bank
is Edmeston had a snow blower on display to promote
the races New Years Eve. Don't know how many have
signed up, but it isn't often (if ever) dignitaries
take part in races of any kind. We have a Banker,
Lawyer, and of course, the Mayor.
The Edmeston Fireman's Calendars are out! If you
didn't get one or know of someone who was missed,
call
Connie Mockovciak at 316-7087. This is a cell phone
number as they have recently moved and do not have a
regular phone at this time.
The first Legion Breakfast of the New Year will be
Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the Legion Hall. This is
by donation and serving is from 7:00 to 10:30 A.M.

Edmeston December 23, 2007
Hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas! We have
now passed the shortest day of the year and are
officially into Winter. It will be awhile before we
start to notice the difference in day light, but we
may notice the cold, as the old saying goes: "As the
days begin to lengthen, the cold begins to
strengthen".
The employees of the New Berlin Office and the
Edmeston Office of the NBT Bank, enjoyed a joint
Christmas Party, Saturday evening, in New Berlin.
If you waited to see if you got a Bicentennial
Calendar for Christmas, and you didn't, they are
still available at the Bank.
A call from Mayor Kent's office informed me that
even though the warmer weather and rain have settled
the snow (more is predicted), the snow blower races
are still on for New Years eve, as of this writing.
Time is getting close for the activities to start
for the Bicentennial. Watch for notices, times and
places for events. We will be celebrating the
founding of Edmeston, 200 years ago! The
Bicentennial Committee has been meeting once a month
for over a year now, and is trying to make sure we
have covered as much as possible for the last 200
years.
Happy New Year!
Edmeston December 16, 2007
A phone call from Mayor Dave Kent's secretary,
reminded me to be sure to mention the upcoming snow
blower races, New Years Eve. They were cancelled
last year for lack of snow, but it doesn't appear
that will be the case this year. Contact Mayor Kent
for the details.
The Edmeston United Methodist Church women had a
luncheon for the residents of West Hill Apartments
on December 10th. After playing Christmas Bingo,
those attending were presented with a gift bag of
baked goods. Wanda (Burch) Landon, of Norwich, a
past member of the Methodist Women's Group, joined
them for the day.
The Alaska Missions Team, catered a Ham Supper, for
the West Hill Terrace residents, Tuesday evening.
Members of the West Edmeston Baptist Church provided
music by singing Christmas Carols with Brenda Belden
as organist.
The Second Baptist Church women donated fruit and
baked goods to the residents of West Hill Terrace.
The residents want to thank them for their kindness
and generosity. It was greatly appreciated. It's
great to live in a caring community.
The road crews were busy Sunday when the area was
hit with sleet, snow and freezing rain. They
certainly do a good job keeping the roads open.
I hope everyone has a safe and Merry Christmas!
Edmeston December 9, 2007
Breakfast with Santa, sponsored by the firemen's
auxiliary, was a big success, Saturday, with over
eighty children coming to see the Jolly Old Man.
When Santa first got into town, he found that either
he had gained weight, or the cleaners had shrunk his
suit. A quick phone call to one of his helpers
located someone who was able to "squeeze" into the
suit. Thanks Jeremy!
The American Legion Post 1311, had their annual
Christmas party, Saturday night, with a delicious
dinner, followed by the exchanging of gifts.
Monty and Gail Smith provided Special Music for the
Advent season, at the United Methodist Church,
Sunday. Judy McCall and John Rzcidulo, will present
more Special Music on Sunday, December 16th. Church
service starts at 10:00 A.M. All are welcome.

Christmas Cantata, "Christmas Tapestry",
Sunday, December 16, 2007 3:00 P.M. at the Edmeston
Central School. Edmeston

Is my face red? I've just learned that the last
couple of times I mentioned the bank, I put in the
wrong name. Guess I was having a Senior moment. In
case you didn't catch it, or just ignored it, the
bank should have been "NBT" Sorry!
One of the Bicentennial throws that the Edmeston
Free Library is selling is on display at the NBT
Bank. There are three colors to choose from. An
ideal Christmas gift or just to keep for yourself.
They are available at the library or contact:

don't delay, pick one up soon!
The Troop 9 Boy Scouts of America, decorated the
park in Burlington Flats, Sunday, November 25th.
This certainly makes the park look "special" for the
Holidays. Great job!
A nice note from Mary Ficken, Hackensack, N.J.
requesting an order form for the Bicentennial book,
"Echoes of the Past" Revisited. If anyone
knows of someone who would like an order form, have
them contact me. They are also available at the NBT

turn-out for her "Cookie Swap", Saturday. A few
people had trouble getting up the driveway. Lots of
cookies and recipes were exchanged, and a good time
was had by all.
Edmeston November 25, 2007
It's always nice to hear from people who live out of
State and still take the Gazette. Over Thanksgiving,
I heard from people who live in Florida, Ohio, Long
Island and Dolgeville. They enjoy reading the local
news, so come on folks, give me some news!
Looks like December 2nd is going to be a busy day!
In the morning, 7:00 to 10:30 AM the Legion
Breakfast. 12:30 PM Christmas Around the World (at
the school). 3:00 PM, the installation service for
Pastor Merritt at the Second Baptist Church.

that the Sunday services are at 10:00 AM and the
Christmas Eve. Service at 7:00 PM and all are
welcome!
Edmeston November 18, 2007
The familiar sound of snow plows and sand trucks
rang through the air Friday night and Saturday
Morning. Guess we got about three inches of snow.
Suppose the deer hunters were happy. When we get a
snow fall like that it makes Mayor Kent start to
think about scheduling the "Snow Blower Races" Give
him a call for details!
It will soon be time for "Breakfast with Santa"!
Sponsored by the Firemen's Auxiliary, this event is
open to all children in the Edmeston Fire District.
The event will take place on Saturday, December 8th
from 9 - 11 AM at the firehouse and includes
breakfast, pictures and a gift for each child. Mark
your calendars....Ho Ho Ho!

collected, sorted and delivered the donations to the
Second Baptist Church Food Pantry in Edmeston and to
the Baptist Church Food Pantry in Burlington Flats.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

The first Sunday with the new minister (Rev. Ray
Merritt) was attended by a large congregation.
Following the service, a coffee hour was enjoyed.
Congratulations to the girls soccer team. They
didn't win the game against Lyme, but gave it a good
try. Final score was 2 to 1, and this came after a
double overtime.
A letter from the North Pole tells me that there
will be a "Breakfast with Santa" at the firehouse on
December 8th. More details later.
The Bicentennial calendars are now on sale. They are

Congratulations to the Girls Soccer Team. They are
the section four champions.
Read more about it here....
As usual, several people got confused with the time
change and were early getting to church, but the
change certainly didn't bother the attendance at the
Legion Breakfast. An excellent turn out.

Sunday, November 11th. Please note that the time for
this service is 10:30 A.M.

Dave and Lynn Kent welcomed friends and relatives
into their home Saturday, in honor of their son
John's return from Iraq. Almost at the same time as
John arrived, Aaron Pylinski also returned safely
from Iraq.
The old timers always say that Winter won't set in
until the swamps are full. After last weekend, it
makes you wonder just what is ahead. Keep in mind
that this weekend we set the clocks back one hour
(standard time). While setting the clocks back, it
would also be a good time to check the batteries in
smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Also check
batteries in your flashlights!
Karen Blackman has contacted her folks to let them
know she is alright, but she did have to evacuate
her home due to the fires in California.
Edmeston October 21, 2007
With sirens sounding and horns blowing, the E.C.S.
Girls Soccer Team was ushered back into Town after
becoming the Tri-Valley Champions! Congratulations
girls!
Troop 9 Boy Scouts, David Johnson, Mark Johnson,
Cory and Dustin Lewandowski, attended Otschodela
Council's Fall Camporee on October 12, 13 and 14 at
the Otsego County Fairgrounds in Morris. The theme
of the camporee was Pioneering. The Scouts had a
great time working together to make flagpoles, a
table and latrine. They participated in competitions
on Saturday against nine other troops and through a
tam effort received one first place and several
third place ribbons. Ask the guys about their
lemonade stand skit at Saturday nights campfire.
A nice note from Dottie Blanchard says that she
received many cards...thanks! It cheers her up to
hear from her friends in Edmeston. She says progress
is slow and that she will be there for quite awhile.
In the event you meant to send a card or note and
didn't, or you would like to send another and don't
have the address, it is: Dorothy Blanchard, 7740

calendar will feature dates and pictures from
Edmeston for the past 200 years.
If your club or organization is planning on selling
memorabilia for the Bicentennial, please let the
committee know, so we can try to avoid duplications.
Saturday evening, a surprise "Appreciation" dinner
was held at the Second Baptist Church in honor of
Rev. Jay Henderson. Pastor Jay has been filling in
until a minister could be found. The next two weeks
will find supply ministers at the church. On
November 4th, Rev. Ray Merritt and wife Virginia
should be here and will be the regular minister for
the church. Many, many thanks to Pastor Jay will
filling the void while a new minister could be
located.
The Edmeston Tea Circle's Kay York has designed this
year's Edmeston Miniature, The Edmeston Town Hall &
Fire Hall. It will be a reproduction of the 1910
building, complete with its bell tower. If you are
fortunate enough to own the entire collection you
won't want to miss this one! The production of the
Town Hall miniatures is progressing nicely. Pick-up
will be Saturday, November 17th. To reserve yours,
call Joyce Hickling at 965-8119. She will need your
name, number of miniatures wanted and telephone
number. These miniatures are treasured in
homes here in Edmeston and in the homes of former
residents in other corners of the nation, and are
displayed in a number of ways. Carrol Robinson's
display even features railroad tracks alongside the
Railroad Station (2006).
You heard it here first....the Tea Circle's
Bicentennial Miniature to be issued in 2008
will be the Edmeston Opera House.
Edmeston October 7, 2007
While taking a ride, to see the colored leaves, I
noticed that the snowmobile club has been busy
putting up new trail markers. I have also seen more
wooly caterpillars, and the markings are all
different - wonder which is the right prediction for
the winter?
October 11 & 12 will find the Annual United
Methodist Church women's Rummage Sale, at the Legion
Hall. The sale starts Thursday, Oct. 11 and runs
from noon until 4:00 P.M. On Friday, the sale starts
at 9:00 and goes until three with a $2.00 bag sale
starting at noon. The Rummage Sale is to benefit the
Camperships to Sky Lake.
When it comes to the number "50", Ike & Eleanor
Vibbard are in the know. On July 4th, their children
gave them an Anniversary Party "50th" of course.
This Summer they took a trip across the United
States, going over 10,000 miles and seeing many
famous places. When they returned home, after the
long trip, the found they had been gone (you guessed
it) "50" days. Congratulations folks.....welcome
home!
Dottie Blanchard is in rehabilitation, after having
surgery, and would enjoy getting cards or notes from
the folks in Edmeston. Her address is: Syracuse
Home, Room 124, 7740 Meigs Road, Bladwinsville, New
York 13027.
Edmeston September 30, 2007
A great day weather wise! People were busy getting
the outside chores done or taking a ride to see the
leaves that are just starting to turn. Anyone
wanting to make a jack-o-lantern shouldn't have any
trouble finding a pumpkin as they seem to be
plentiful this year.
Bob & Helen Alcott have returned after spending some
time with Holly, Joe & Jack in Venidji, Minnesota.
The day they arrived home, Helen celebrated her
birthday. Happy Birthday Helen!
Bob & Bernie Nonenmacher spent a couple of weeks in
Canada.
Wes & Rosemary Stephens recently took a tour to Cape
Cod. During this tour, they were lucky enough to be
able to see a couple of whales.
The date change didn't seem to bother the attendance
at the Legion Breakfast. The next breakfast will be
October 14th and will be put on by the Legion
Baseball Team.
Cathy Sheldon had the misfortune to fall in her
backroom and break a bone in her leg. I understand
she is getting around with a cast. Get well soon
Cathy!
Seeber Robinson is having a hip replacement. The
operation was scheduled to be on Tuesday. Hope by
the time this goes to press, he will be home.
Edmeston September 23, 2007
Looking out my kitchen window, Monday, there were
eleven robins on the lawn. It was almost like they
were making travel plans to head South. About ten
minutes later, they were gone. When I went to get
the morning paper, there was a wooly-bear
caterpillar on the walk. He was less than a quarter
black and that was on the front. To me, both of
these are signs of Fall.
Keep in mind that the date for the Legion Breakfast
had to be changed. It will be this Sunday, September
30th. serving is from 7:00 to 10:30 A.M.
Troop 9 Boy Scouts, Johnny Knorr, Mark Johnson and
David Johnson, donned backpacks and climbed Mount
Tremper in Phonecia on Saturday, September 15th.
They spent the night on the mountain in a lean-to
before climbing back down on Sunday morning. It was
a fantastic day and the views from the fire tower
were amazing. The boys can't wait to visit more fire
towers in the Catskills.
The weather couldn't have been better for the
Edmeston Youth Festival. Day long events included, a
craft fair, chicken BBQ, community garage sales, a
walk-a-thon, as well as a full slate of soccer
games. A big vote of thanks to any and all who took
part in any way to make this a huge success.
Edmeston September 16, 2007
With the predication of possible frost, people have
been busy clearing gardens and taking in plants. So
far we have been very lucky and its the middle of
September!
By the time this goes to press, it will be Fall.
Autumn begins September 23rd. Where does the time
go? At the present rate, it will soon be time for
Edmeston to celebrate it's Bicentennial. On April
1st, there will be a Community Birthday Party,
celebrating the founding of Edmeston, 200 years ago.
The Bicentennial Committee is planning several
events for April, May, June & July. The celebrations
will end with the firemen's convention in July.
Clubs and organizations are encouraged to take part.
If your Club or Organization will be selling
memorabilia or sponsoring an event, please contact
the Bicentennial Committee so that it can be listed
and avoid any duplications.
Edmeston September 9, 2007
The Edmeston Free Library would like to thank
everyone who attended the book sale on Saturday. It
was a big success and a great way to get some good
reading.
The first Legion Breakfast of the season was well
attended. The date of the next breakfast will have
to be changed due to conflicts. September 30th is
the next scheduled breakfast, rather than the first
Sunday. The Legion baseball team will have a
breakfast at the Legion Hall on October 14th.
The Edmeston Free Library held its bi-monthly
meeting, Monday evening, at the home of Leon
Schworm. Regular library business was conducted and
Dottie Blackman gave a report on the book sale.
The morning worship service at the Second Baptist
Church, Sunday, was lead by Reverend Ray Merritt.
Reverend Merritt has been a candidate for the
position. Following the service, the congregation
voted to accept Reverend Merritt as their new
pastor. Reverend Merritt and his wife, Virginia,
will be moving here around the first part of
November, from Brookville, Pa.

Edmeston September 2, 2007
On Saturday, September 8th, the Edmeston Free
Library will hold the annual book sale 9:00 A.M. to
1:00 P.M. The sale is upstairs in the library
building. A great time to pick up some good reading.
At first glance, the neighbors thought George
Blessing was getting a Christmas tree for Dolores,
but a closer look turns up he was only taking care
of the evergreen that split and came crashing down
during the storm the other night.
Bu now everyone should have received the 2007-2008
School Calendar. Did you ever notice that they put
this calendar out, and almost the next day, the
School Tax notices are out?
As I sat on my porch, Thursday evening, the wind
came up and I'm sure someone got rain. The humidity
was gone and the temperature dropped. About that
time there was a flock of geese flying low. Can't
say that they were heading South, but the last two
were flying with what appeared to be a suitcase.
A financial planning seminar on Wealth Transfer,
will be presented by Brian Lent at the NBT Edmeston
Office, September 12, 2007 5:00 - 6:00 P.M. This
informal session is free and open to the public.
The Youth Days Parade had to be stopped for a short
time because of the rain, but it did continue and as
a result, the Edmeston Bicentennial float took third
place in the commercial float division. The trophy
was hand delivered to the chairman of the Edmeston
Committee by Bud and Mary Lyons.
Don't forget the book sale Saturday!
Edmeston August 26, 2007
When the call "Play Ball" goes out in the Spring,
hopefully the Edmeston Girls Soft Ball Team will
come out on top. Saturday, a new soft ball field was
created on the hill behind the school. Through the
efforts of Vicki Johnson, the necessary funds were
donated (no tax dollars were involved). Through the
heat and humidity, Ron Tasior, Brian Burgess, Bud
Martin, Marty Slentz, Les McCall, Gary Lawrence, Tim
and Vicki Johnson, Lisa and David Norton, Pete
Smith, Rob Cornell, Bill Bennis, Rich Dennis. Scott
Porter and John Axtell and the use of equipment from
Wengert's, the field was built. We are so luck to
live in a community where friends and neighbors work
together to complete such projects.
Tim and Belle Tophoven provided the flat bed truck
for the Bicentennial float in the New Berlin Youth
Days Parade. The float designed and put together by
Alan & Cathy Sheldon, Scott & Laura Porter, Gordon,
Joan & Royce Terry, depicted life in Edmeston for
the past 200 years. Riding on the float would
have been Madison, McKenzie, Miranda & Scott Porter.
Alan Sheldon, Monica & Tatum Clark, Mallory & Rachel
Eckert. Due to the hard thunder storm, the parade
was called off for about half an hour. When the
parade resumed, many of the participants had left,
but one loan Edmeston representative (Royce Terry)
rode the float to the end. Thanks Royce for helping
to promote the Edmeston Bicentennial which will be
next year.
Time again for the Legion to start serving
breakfast. Due to Labor Day, the first breakfast
will be Sunday, September 9th. As in the past, they
will be serving the first Sunday of each month until
May.
Have a safe Labor Day, and keep in mind that school
will be starting, so watch for school Busses and
children. Through Summer we tend to get a little lax
on our driving skills.....time to sharpen them up!
Edmeston August 19, 2007
Joyce Hickling was stopped in her tracks and left
speechless on Sunday, August 12th when she walked
into a surprise 60th birthday party. The party was
thrown for her by her husband Lawrence and children
Paul and Sharon. It was held at the Norton family
pavilion on Coontown Mountain Road, with food
prepared to perfection by the Wengert, Norton and
Hickling families, including mounds of sweet corn
provided by Russ Bowen. Also attending were Joyce's
mother, Betty Heller of Manlius, her brother Erich
and wife Linda of Camillus, and her sister Amy
Penoyer and her children Camron and Kali of Cicero,
and Joyce's cousin Dave Lord of Horseheads. Joyce
says her head is still swimming from the shock of it
all, but she's so grateful to be surrounded by so
many loving people in her life.
Belated, but sincere congratulations to Belle and
Tim Tophoven on the occasion of their 25th wedding
anniversary. They celebrated at home with light
refreshments amongst many family and friends on
Saturday, August 11th.
The corn is as high as an elephants eye. That sure
is true this year. So many places are selling sweet
corn, and is it ever good. Hate to see the season
end as we know what comes next.
Wes & Rosemary Stephens entertained, Scott, Megan
and Jack, Sunday evening for supper. Scott leaves
Thursday for college at Cobleskill.
Leon Schworm hosted a family get-together last
Sunday. Twenty one family members attended,
including Earl & Lavohn from Florida. Other
relatives came from Syracuse, Greene and New Berlin.
Marilyn Davis, Lebanon Ohio and Thresea Benson,
Florida, have been in the area visiting friends and
relatives. While here they enjoyed a Birthday Supper
put on by Leon Schworm. Theresa's birthday was
Monday, Marilyn's Wednesday and Deb Peter's Friday.
Everyone enjoyed talking about old times.
Scott Porter and Alan Sheldon tell me they have
completed the Bicentennial float that will be in the
New Berlin Youth Days parade. New Berlin is having
their Bicentennial this year and Edmeston will
celebrate next year.
The final concert for the season at Pathfinder
Village will be Saturday evening. "Jump Start" a
local rock 'n roll band will play songs from the
50's through today.
Edmeston August 5, 2007
The Edmeston Emergency Squad held their monthly
meeting, Sunday evening, at the firehouse. The
Squad, as well as the fire department is seeking new
members. If you are interested or have questions,
contact any of the members. If they are unable to
answer you, they will direct you to someone who can.
The August meeting of the Bicentennial Committee was
held in the Town Clerks Office, Monday evening.
Scott Porter and Alan Sheldon will create a
Bicentennial float to be in the New Berlin Youth
Days parade on August 25th.
I have had several calls regarding the cook book the
Bishop Print Shop is talking about doing. The letter
they sent out recently was dated April 5, 2007. It
talked about the sesquicentennial (150th
Anniversary) when in fact it is the Bicentennial
(200th Anniversary). Several people have indicated
to me they want to know the price before they place
an order. I don't mind the phone calls, but I don't

Dear Peet Hookers,
In celebration of the Bicentennial of the town
of Edmeston, we, at The Bishop Printshop, Inc.
are in the process of compiling a cook book,
(The Cooks of Peet Hook). For the newer
residents of Edmeston, Peet Hook is a nickname
for Edmeston. So send us at least one recipe, 2
or more would be better. We will try to put
everyoneıs recipes in this book, even if there
are duplicates.
Also, we would like to put in some old family
recipes, (this is what the book is all about,
history of cooking in Peet Hook). So if you have
a recipe that your mother, grandmother, aunt,
etc. used, please send it to us. If we get
enough of this kind of recipe, we will make up a
special section for them.
One other section we would like to do is a
complete family meal. If your family has a
special Sunday, Holiday, (Christmas, Easter 4th
of July, Birthdays, Etc.) dinner that you enjoy,
please give it all to us. That would be like
salad, soup, main meal, desert, or whatever you
do.
We will also be putting a little of Peet Hook
history in this book. So again, if you have any
stories of a past family member, just send it
along.
If you think you may want to purchase some
for gifts, let us know, and we will get back to
you when we know the printing cost. We will only
be printing enough to fill the orders we get.
We hope to have this book published in early
November, in time for Christmas 2007. As of yet
we do not have a price and wonıt know that until
we know how many recipes we have.
PS. You can also you can fax them to
607-965-2007, or email
michael@bishopprintshop.com
Thank You
Michael E. Lampron, President
The Bishop Printshop, Inc.

The rain showers held off better than the weather
man had predicted, which was a good thing as it was
a very busy time for the area. The Peet Hook Players
production of "Meet Me In St. Louis", the races at
Undailla Sports Center, and the Baseball Inductions
at Cooperstown. If that isn't activity enough, the
Otsego County Fair started on July 31st. Who ever
said that there is nothing to do?

Just before I started this column, the sun was
shinning and there was a very slight breeze. Since
then, it has clouded up and looks like rain. The
weatherman said there would be scattered showers
today, but should be clearing. Hope the sun breaks
through for the parades. I know having it a little
cooler is a welcome relief for those who are
marching. Regardless of what you do this Memorial
Day (camping, boating, picnicking or visiting the
cemeteries) I hope your day was enjoyable and safe.
Congratulations to Darlene Camenga! Darlene recently
was presented the Outstanding Service and Dedication

As I sit here, looking across the valley, there are
but a few traces of snow where it drifted. The grass
is starting to turn green and the trees in the woods
are casting a red glow, indicating the buds are
about to pop. The peepers have been heard the last
few nights, and according to folklore, they must
freeze three times, which they have done in the past
few nights, so Spring should finally be here.
Kathy Nevil was in town over the weekend to visit

the red, white and blue?
The family of Lee Due "Junior" Jaquay, will host a

A perfect day for the 2nd Annual Easter Egg Hunt,
sponsored by the firemen's auxiliary. The location
of the hunt had to be changed due to the wet
conditions of the lawn at 63 South Street. Over 50
kids hunted for the colorful eggs. The Easter Bunny
was on hand to see the kids and have pictures taken.
A great time was had by all.
Several grass fires were reported over the weekend.
Keep in mind that just because the snow has melted
and the ground is wet, the dry grass on the surface
burns very fast.
The syrup season seems to be winding down. It wasn't
a very good year for the maple producers.
The American Legion Baseball team will be sponsoring

Hope everyone set their clocks ahead one hour
(daylight savings time). There is usually one or two
who get confused and set them back or else forget to
set them at all and end up going to church just as
the service is ending.
Saturday was a much warmer day than we have had for
quite awhile. If you got out for a little ride and
change of scenery, you no doubt noticed that the
trees are being tapped. Someone reported seeing a
red winged black bird.

Mayor Dave Kent announced at the NASCAR Club he was
thinking of re-scheduling the snow blower races that
