Edmeston December 26, 2005
Last week I made mention of the shortest day
of the year and the official start of Winter.
This brought a few coments, so this week I'd
like to give a little "ray of encouragement" and
say that I received my first seed catalogue of
the Season, Saturday, so that means that Spring
is scheduled to take place again this year.
Because New Years Day will be Sunday, the Legion
breakfast will take place on January 8th.
A growing concern about the disappearing snow
for the snowblower races. The sponsors may have
to truck in snow or cancel the first annual
snowblower races if Mother Nature doesn't
co-operate. If it takes a snowblower race to
make the snow go away, I say, lets schedule
another one and soon!
Resolutions for the coming year will be made.
Some will actually keep them, but for many, they
will be broken. Regardless if you make or break,
have a Happy New Year!

Edmeston December 19, 2005
At the December 7th meeting, four members of
the Edmeston Volunteer Fire Department, were
recognized by the New York State Firemans
Association, for having 50 plus years of
service. Receiving certificates and plates were:
John Chesebrough, Guy Carey, Seeber Robinson and
Don Howard. Congratulations to these dedicated
men!
Employees of the New Berlin and Edmeston
branches of NBT Bank, enjoyed a social hour and
dinner at the Riverbend Golf course, Saturday
Night.
There are at least five confirmed entries for
the "Snow blower" race on New Years Eve. To some
extent, the contestants will be in costume.
Starting time is midnight, behind Dave Kent's
house. An interesting, fun way to usher in the
New Year.
A new selection of books has been received at
the library, from the Four County Library
system. Dottie Blackman, librarian, will be only
too happy to help you select a book or two. A
great way to spend some time these cold nights.
By the time this goes to press, we will
officially be into Winter. December 21st was the
first day, also the shortest day of the year.
Merry Christmas!

Edmeston December 12, 2005
The BYF were around Town Saturday night, singing
Christmas Carols. As it has been the custom for
many years, the group ends up at the home of
John and Dottie Blackman where they enjoy
fellowship and refreshments.
With the addition of fresh snow, almost daily,
it looks like there could be some fun at the
first Snow blower races, New Years evening. The
organizers of the event still haven't given me
times or location, but I understand the contact
person is Dave Kent.
Don't forget the Christmas Cantata, Sunday night
at the Burlington Flats Baptist Church, 7:00
P.M. All are Welcome!
The American Legion Hall was nicely decorated
for the season and the Legion Christmas Party.
The event was catered by L & L catering and was
enjoyed by everyone.

Edmeston December 5, 2005
The "Christmas Around the World" dinner was
held at the Edmeston Central School cafeteria,
Sunday, December 4th, with a very good
attendance. The late Eleanor Rider was very
instrumental in starting this event over thirty
years ago, through the Area Council of Churches.
A moment of silence was observed in memory of
Eleanor.
The area Ministers sang carols, Dana Mockovciak
and Chuck Arnold spoke about the Alaska Missions
project and had a short DVD showing the camp.
The "GEMS" (Gail and Monte Smith) also provided
music for the occasion.
The Edmeston Rotary Club is again sponsoring
their "Christmas Project". They are asking for
toys and clothing to be given to needy families
in the Edmeston-Burlington area. New toys may be
left in the collection box at the NBT Bank. New
and used items may be left at the Second Baptist
Church Annex before Friday afternoon, December
16th.
Warm clothing and Winter coats and jackets are
especially needed. These items should be in good
condition. Distribution of the toys and clothing
will be Saturday, December 17th at the Edmeston
Central School from 9:00 - 11:00 A.M. If you
know of a family who could benefit from this
project, please contact any Rotarian.
Something NEW in the works. I understand plans
are being made for snow-blower races to take
place New Years Eve. This event will be for walk
behind snow blowers only. More information will
be available soon.

Edmeston - November 28, 2005
Several fender benders resulted because of
the snow storm. The first snow always seems more
slippery, but guess it is because we aren't used
to it. It takes awhile to adjust our driving
habits after having a nice Summer and Fall.
Sunday, December 4th, will be Breakfast time
again. A great breakfast can be had at the
Legion Hall from 7:00 to 10:30 A.M. The first
Sunday of each month through the Winter. This is
by donation.
Alice Quintin and Jeanne Westcott, recently
visited former Edmeston resident, Roger
Blackman, in Binghamton.
The Edmeston Senior Citizens Club have decided
not to meet during the Winter months. Regular
meetings will resume the third Saturday of each
month, stating March 18th.
Wes Stephens has returned home after having
by-pass surgery at MIB Hospital in Cooperstown.
At this writing he seems to be doing fine and
gaining every day.
With the banner flags in place and many homes
starting to decorate for the Holidays, Edmeston
is starting to look quite festive.

Edmeston - November 21, 2005
If you see Royce Terry, Allen Wengert, Raven
Brown, Justin Bowen, Susan Arnold, James Arnold,
Kimberly Rathbone or Cayden Tomlins, ask them
how they enjoyed the day in Saratoga! These
eight youths from the Second Baptist Church BYF,
attended the Veteran's Ceremony, at the Saratoga
National Cemetery on Veteran's Day. The ceremony
included Presenting and Retiring of the Colors,
and a Twenty One Gun Salute. Joan Terry took the
group for a tour of the grounds, including the
unique Columbarium and traditional grave sites.
Pictures were taken in front of the USS Saratoga
Bell. Its unique story is also displayed at the
Wharton Valley American Legion Post 1311.
Special thanks to Ranger Mike, Gloria Robinson
and Denise Arnold for helping make this trip
memorable and enjoyable.
Thirty young snowmobile enthusiasts (ages 10 to
17) completed a "Snowmobile Safety Courst", held
at the American Legion Hall on November 12th.
The Safety Course was sponsored by the Edmeston
Panther Tracks Snowmobile Club.
The banner flags along the streets are scheduled
to be changed right after Thanksgiving. The
Holiday Season flags will be put up. I
understand a few new flags will appear welcoming
anyone to Edmeston.
A couple of local hunters started the deer
season early! They didn't have guns, but did
manage to "corral" a deer on one of the new
playing fields of the Edmeston Central School.
Before they left the scene, they did let the
captive deer go. For more details on how you
corral a deer, contact either Ron Tasior or Dave
Green.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Edmeston - November 14, 2005

The Pittsfield and West Edmeston Fire
Departments joined the Edmeston Fire Department,
Sunday morning for a controlled burn. The debris
from a fire a couple of years ago at the Bessie
Chase home was burned and pushed into the
cellar. This makes the area look much better --
Great Job!
The Peet Hook Players met Sunday night at the
Second Baptist Church to select a play to be
presented during the Winter. If Winter seems to
drag for you, why not join the Players and have
some fun?
Halil's Market (formerly Schworm's Store) has a
new sign and a large selection of groceries.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is now available
(eat in or take out) The name has changed, but
not the phone number (965-2334) Give it a try.

Edmeston - November 7, 2005
The Edmeston Tea Circle will be holding a Bake

by the Senior Citizens at noon!
I understand Audry Lohnas is in the hospital. This
information was given to me on Friday, so perhaps
she is out and back home by now, lets hope so!
Olive Utter, a former Edmeston resident, was taken
to MIB Hospital, Cooperstown, suffering from a
heart attack. No report on her condition or
progress. This information was also given to me on
Friday.
Banner Flags have been placed on the light poles
in front of the school and up the back driveway.
These were placed there by the school and is a
nice addition. The Banner Flags, sponsored by the
Edmeston Rotary Club, are to be changed soon from
the American Flag to the Holiday Season ones.
Doesn't seem like it is time for the Holiday
Season, but it will be here before we know it.

ones in your smoke detectors!
Dave Green has returned home after visiting his
parents, Owen and Alice Green, in North Carolina.
Said he didn't hit any snow until Sidney, and was

can't be Bushy-Tailed, at least try to be bright
eyed!

think it is important, but your vote does count!

Sunday afternoon to help Lisa Jensen celebrate her
15th Birthday. Happy Birthday Lisa!
Well, its that time of year again. Yes, this
Saturday night when you go to bed, don't forget to
set your clocks BACK one hour as daylight savings
time ends! For many it means getting that hour
back they lost in the Spring, while for others it
means it will be dark in the morning when they go
to work and dark in the evening when they come
home.

Edmeston October 17, 2005
Jeannine Palmiter has had a hip replacement.

and hurt his back. Get well soon Dave!

the building in a very mannerly way and in a short
period of time.
Helen Mockovciak and Barbara Utter recently flew
to Tucson, Arizona. While there they went to the
USS Manchester Reunion. This is the ship John was

Many friends gathered at the Blackman's Sunday

The youth groups from the Second Baptist Church,
Edmeston and Brookfield, went to Utica-Rome
Speedway on July 17th. Gene & Gloria Cole had made
arrangements for John Keegan to take the group on
a tour of the pits and to meet the raceway
Chaplin. It was autograph night, so checker flags
were purchased for signatures. Those attending
from the Edmeston Church were: Royce Terry, Hannah
& Bryden Burchill, Mallory Eckert, Dave & Zac
Ruffles, Corey Simmons, Cayden Tomlins, Allen
Wengert, Arielle Zaleski, Mark Johnston, Dustin
Lewandowski and Scott Simmons. A good time was had
by all.
Gordon, Joan & Royce Terry, recently went to
Strasburg, Pa. where they stayed at the Red
Caboose Motel and toured Train Museums and Amish
Farms. Following this, they went to Gettysburg for
a private tour of the battlefield. Joan is partial
to both Longstreet and Chamberlain, so the guide
focused on day two of the battle. Ranger Gene
explained the Gettysburg National Cemetery. To
this day they are still finding Union and
Confederate remains. Even if you don't believe in
ghosts, no visit would be complete without a
"Ghost Tour". Their trip ended at Hershey Park
where Gordon and Royce tested out the roller
coaster rides, some twice, while Joan hung out in
the shade.
Bob & Bernie Nonenmacher recently went to Ashland,
Virginia, to attend the wedding of their grand
daughter, Jennifer Fern DesRoches. Jenny is the
daughter of Dani Nonenmacher and Ron DesRoches,
formerly of Edmeston. The Nonenmacher family took
advantage of the event to hold one of their
frequent family reunions. All five Nonenmacher
children, twelve grand children and two great
grandchildren were present.

Bobby and Ann Schworm picked up Joy Beeching,
Saturday, who thought they were taking her to Red
Lobster in honor of her 60th Birthday. They

surprise, arranged by her children. A good time
was had by all. Happy Birthday, Joy!
Mr. and Mrs. Earl Schworm, Placida, Florida, are

Why not take a minute to drop Eleanor Rider a card
or note? Her address is: Mrs. Eleanor Rider,

The warm weather and the County Fair didn't seem
to keep the attendance down. Over 325 people
attended the Peet Hook Players production of "Lagooned".
The crowd enjoyed the production and the cast had
a ball. Following the show Sunday, the cast and
crew went to the home of Don and Irene Howard for
a pizza party.
The Town Water Board has asked residence to
restrict the use of water. The lack of rain and
the extremely hot weather has put a strain on the
water supply. Please refrain from using water on
lawns, gardens and washing cars.
Millers convenience store and gas station is
making great progress. It shouldn't be long before
we can get gas and supplies without driving some
distance.

Holdridge was celebrated with a brunch at the
Holdridges' on Tuesday, July 26th. Dottie & John
Blackman, who recently celebrated their 50th,
rounded out the guests, to make a total of 218
years of marriage.
Since their previous get-together was in 1999, at
the time of their 50th anniversary, it proves that
some couples just keep on going. Watch for the
next installlment in 2009.

Edmeston July 25, 2005
Guess everyone is on vacation or the humidity is
keeping them home as there doesn't seem to be any
news to report. I tried to find something for last
week and could't and this week doesn't seem to be
any better.
The Pittsfield Community days certainly had good
weather as did the Pathfinder concert.
Happy Birthday wishes were extended to Rosemary
Stephens Saturday night. The cake didn't have any
candles on it, guess Wes forgot to get them. It
was too hot anyway - Happy Birthday Rosemary.
The Peet Hook Players musical "Lagooned" is coming
up. An enjoyable musical-comedy. Show dates are

Several graduation parties over the weekend, some
with fireworks. The weather was just perfect for
campers and picnics. All in all a great 4th of
July.
Tim, Cindy and Jennifer Davis were here from Ohio
for the Alumni Banquet. Tim graduated 30 years ago
from New Berlin Central and Cindy graduated 30
years ago from Edmeston Central. While here, they
were able to see many old friends and relatives.
Tim was even able to get in some golf with
friends.
Gavin, Hannah and Chad Goodier spent a few days
camping near Indian Lake. The first time the kids
had been on a camping trip like that and they are
ready to go again, the question is dad ready to go

Thanks to all who attended the Turkey Dinner,
sponsored by the Fire Department and
Auxiliary. Over 100 take out dinners were served
and at least that many or more eat-in
dinners. It's great to see such support as if any
of us has an emergency, we expect these
people to respond.

Sharon McLean recently
purchased a home on Pleasant Avenue in Edmeston
and is now comfortably enjoying the sounds of
speeding cars, blowen mufflers and squealing
tires. Moving from the quiet country apartment at
Bob Kirk's, this is quite a change, but she no
longer is a renter, but has a home of her own.
Congratulations Sharon!
Ryan Lund and crew
were busy this past weekend moving the single wide
mobile home on South Street and getting ready to
lay a pad for a double wide.
Isabelle Kent is now
in the Veterans Home in Oxford.
Laura Ruffles had a
very large, old, mulberry tree break in one of our
recent wind/rain storms. She said this was her
very favorite tree and will miss harvesting the
mulberries.
