Saturday morning found the ever popular “Breakfast with Santa” at the firehouse. A joint effort by the firemen and auxiliary and always very popular. In addition to breakfast, each child receives a wrapped gift and a chance to talk to Santa, as well as a picture. I didn’t get a count of the kids, but know they went through 13 dozen scrambled eggs.
By the time this goes to press it will be almost too late, so would like to take this time to wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

- I have just been looking ahead at the calendar and have come up on an item that I think needs attention. For the past few years, the American Legion has not had a ceremony to dispose the American flags that are no longer serviceable. It is my understand Steve Goodrich is the commander now and I think this would be a good time to start working on him for a ceremony on November 11th. The flags stand up very well considering they are out in all kinds of weather, but many are shameful to still be out. Take a few minutes and give Steve a call and get a ceremony scheduled.

- Have you ever really stopped to see how automated we have become? We park in a parking lot and upon leaving the car, the lights blink, the horn sounds and the doors lock.
- Entering the store, the doors open and close behind us. After shopping, the machine tells us how much we spent, what for, how many items, gives us a discount and even figures the tax and how much change we are due. Returning to the car, the lights blink, the horn sounds and the doors unlock….not bad for being automated.
Edmeston ~ September 11, 2016

There are over thirty new vendors and a thrill show called “Pirates of Colombian Caribbean” This could be just the shot in the arm the fair board needs. See you at the Fair!

- Hats off to Tom Golden for his commentary on Barney Ray (You Can Not Tell a Book By Its Cover, Gazette, July 1, 2016) Many knew Barney, but for the few took the time and acknowledge the man that would go without himself to help others. Tom did a nice job reflecting on Barney Ray (June 23, 2016.)

- The Edmeston Museum was open special for Fathers Day. There were over 35 fathers and children in attendance. It was interesting to hear the kids ask questions and the fathers giving an answer. For the most part the fathers did very well. It was a good day and an interesting experience and one that I’m sure the kids will remember for a long time.

MEMORIAL DAY Monday will once again see us observing Memorial Day. For years past it has been tradition to go to the cemeteries to remember those who have departed. This was often done with flowers from local gardens. The late frost killed the lilacs as well as other flowers. If you will be at a grave of a lost loved one please pause for a moment to remember.
Edmeston ~ May 15, 2016
Mother Nature sure hates to give us a break. Sunday, along with rain, wind and some sun, we had a few snow flakes. The folks that went South for the winter must all be back by now and they really don’t care about seeing snow.

It’s hard to believe that the temperature can be in the upper seventies in the afternoon and down into the thirties by morning. Mother Nature sure likes to keep us guessing.
I went out on the back deck Sunday afternoon to enjoy the sunshine. I didn’t realize the wind was that cold, so didn’t stay long. Just before I went back inside there was a very loud crack, and a lot of pine needles in the air. The wind had blown about half of a very large pine tree onto the house. Couldn’t tell from my view point how much damage was done, but know there is some.
With May rushing right along, here are a few dates to remember: the 15th Peace Officers Memorial Day. May 21st Armed Forces Day, and of course May 30th Memorial Day.

Walking up to a department store fabric counter, a pretty girl asked, “I want to buy this material for a new dress. How much does it cost?”
“Only one kiss per yard”, replied a smirking male clerk.
“ That’s fine,” replied the girl. “I’ll take 10 yards”.
With expectation and anticipation written all over his face, the clerk quickly measured and wrapped the cloth, then teasingly held it out.
The girl snapped up the package and pointed to a little old man standing beside her. “Grandpa will pay the bill,” she smiled.

Aching muscles, sun burn and blisters all went hand in hand over the weekend. Raking and general cleanup seemed to be the order and with the exceptional nice weather many items should have gotten done. It seemed so good to be able to get fresh air into the house.

Edmeston ~ March 27, 2016
Other than a very frosty morning, Easter Sunday was a picture perfect day.
April showers bring May flowers or that is what the old saying was. We would go to the hardware store to get the old wall paper catalogs to make May baskets. Today’s youth have no idea what you are talking about. We didn’t need electronic devices for entertainment, we made our own. How many of these old traditions have we forgotten? It’s quite noticeable when you see the few fisherman out on the first day of trout season. Guess its easier to sit before the TV and guzzle a beer rather than get fresh air and exercise.

Couple of weeks ago, Anna Mumbulo called to tell me she had a robin on her lawn. Guess he was singing his heart out to her. Well, the same bird returned to sing a song again, this time to Anna who will be celebrating her 85th birthday on March 19th. Happy Birthday Anna!
Edmeston ~ March 6, 2016
To treat a case of cabin fever, I decided to take a little ride and enjoy the sunshine and warmer weather. On my trip I was able to see a few robins, a woodchuck and some red winged black birds. Upon returning home my neighbor saw a run, cleaning out an old nest. It would appear that she was getting ready to make a new one. Do you suppose this is a sign that Spring is on its way? Think Spring!

When the weather man predicted an Arctic Blast last week end we didn’t pay much attention, it hit! Minus 27 was the reading in town Sunday morning and to make things worse, the power was off for some for about two hours. As I write this the cold is still hanging on, but prediction is for warmer weather starting Tuesday. It makes you appreciate what you have until you don’t have it.

In last weeks Gazette under “Early Files” it mentioned H. A. Odell returning to his store after two week illness. I was contacted by a man in Fort Drum who had purchased a sleigh in Burlington Flats and it came from H. A. Odell in Edmeston. Small world!
According to the “Early Files” we used to get hit hard with snow. Right now it looks like the Ground Hog will be able to come out on his own rather than being pulled out of his hole.

Many times an item may not be of interest to you, but someone who has moved away likes it. From time to time I hear from someone who subscribes to the Gazette and they live away, they like to try to keep up on the old town through the Gazette. Its not easy to come up with something every week. If you have an item someone might be interested in send it in so we can keep these readers in touch with the “Home Town”.
